Safety and Guardians

One VR Viewer

A Guardian lets you create boundaries in VR that appear when you get too close to the edge of your safe play area.

Please ensure you have a clear space. We suggest a 3x3m area.

The larger the area the more you will be able to walk around the design.

Pick up your Controllers – making sure you have the L & R in the correct hands.

Turn on your Headset, place over your eyes and follow the on screen prompts to create a Guardian.

You will need to:

1. Confirm the floor level.
2. Define your safe play area with your Controllers (the clear space you have available).

Two VR Viewers

If you have multiple users in VR headsets you will need to set up a guardian for each one.

For safety the guardians cannot overlap, if they do the VR users can collide. We recommend leaving a 1m gap between each play space.

Two Tablet Viewers

If you have multiple users with Tablets we recommend you allocate different areas for them to explore in.

For safety leave at least a 1 metre gap between areas to prevent collisions. You can do this by marking an area on the floor.

VR User and Tablet Viewer

If you have viewers using both a Tablet and Headset we recommend you allocate different areas to explore in.

For safety leave at least a 1 metre gap between areas to prevent collisions. You can do this by marking an area on the floor for the tablet and drawing the guardian for the VR user.

Explaining Safety

To explain the guardian to the VR users have them walk slowly to the edge of the play space with the headset on.

They will see a mesh barrier appear as they reach the boundary.

Explain to the user that this marks the safe area, if they walk through the barrier the headset will switch to pass-through, meaning the cameras on the headset will display the room rather than the VR model.

Resetting the Guardian

1. Click the Oculus Button on the right controller to bring up the universal menu.
2. Select Quick Settings from the left of the toolbar.
3. Select Guardian.
4. Select Create Guardian – Roomscale.
5. Select Redraw.
6. Follow the on-screen instructions to reset your Guardian.
